FIVE COMMON REASON CHECK ENGINE LIGHT POP UP
Post by Allen Huang, Updated on December 11th, 2020
Consider vehicle as primary transportation for daily use thus accumulate great amount of mileage, there are few parts within the engine or exhaust system will start to wear off as consumables. On the vehicle's dashboard, an engine-shaped icon or "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" lights up, indicates Engine Control Unit (ECU) pick up an anomaly or deviate signal from the sensors within the vehicle. Here are some common reason Check Engine Light is on for your reference and downside or affects if not deal with any time soon.
There are two state for check engine light – ILLUMINATED or BLINKING
Commonly due to frequently use of the vehicle, certain parts will start to degenerate or even malfunction. The faulty parts will output offset or wrong signal toward Engine control unit (ECU) leads Check engine light stay illuminated. Under illuminated circumstance, vehicle can still be drivable. However, engine system sensors tandem each other for ECU to monitor and analysis for ideal use of fuel economy. If ignored for too long, it may affect fuel consumption and even damage certain parts due to error output leads to contamination.
If the check engine light is blinking which indicates that the vehicle is in critical functional issue. It needs to be check immediately.
1. OXYGEN SENSOR MALFUNCATION
Oxygen sensor known as O2 sensor; it monitors the amount of oxygen within generated exhaust gas. By outputting reading for ECU to regulate fuel injection to sustain ideal fuel economy or to identify when gas is burned incompletely.
INFLUENCE & AFFECTS
- Bad fuel economy and wasting gas
- Fuel contamination and may damage spark plug and catalytic converter
2. MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR MALFUNCTION
Mass airflow sensor known as MAF sensor; it monitors the amount of air that entered vehicles' engine system. ECU received the reading and regulate the amount of gas to achieved ideal fuel use. Invalid signal may cause via intake air leak or contamination on MAF sensing component.
INFULENCE & AFFECTS
- Rough idle or trouble starting the vehicle
- Fuel contamination and may damage spark plug, oxygen sensor, and catalytic converter
3. CATALYTIC CONVERTER MALFUNCTION
Catalytic converter reduces harmful emission generated via combusting fuel as a process station within exhaust system. A worn catalytic converter usually clogs the exhaust influence the intake system unable to suck in enough air for engine to run ideally.
INFLUENCE & AFFECTS
- Bad fuel economy and wasting gas
- Rough idle or reduced acceleration
- Failed emission test
- Engine failure
4. FUEL CAP LOOSE or DAMAGED
About vehicles' fuel deliver system, it must be sealed completely due to gasoline can be vaporize and escape through the air. Fuel deliver system is also controlled under set pressure for fuel pump to work regularly.
INFLUENCE & AFFECTS
- Lose fuel due to vaporization
- Fuel deliver system anomaly
5. SPARK PLUG / IGNITION COIL MALFUNCTION
Spark plugs generate a spark to ignite fuel via ignition coil provided electricity. Commonly spark plug wear off due to contamination via fuel residue. Another potential factor may be worn plug wiring. It can affect from starting the vehicle to reduce acceleration and can be dangerous during driving.
INFLUENCE & AFFECTS
- Vehicle misfiring
- Trouble starting the vehicle
- Rough idle or reduced acceleration
- Bad fuel economy and wasting gas
- Fuel contamination and may damage engine
